Who is supporting your health and fitness journey?

Good support is extremely important and will help lead to consistent long term results. Ensuring that you have supportive people who you trust and you know care about you will empower you on your journey and help you be successful in all you want to accomplish. It would be very helpful if your support is someone you connect with and who empowers you to take accountability and action. Skills don’t mean anything if you don’t trust them and know they care about you. What is most important is establishing trust and building a relationship with your support system, it is from here that skills can be thoughtfully applied and utilized to help you. You can’t help someone well if you don’t take time to get to know them and they don’t trust you. This is something I have experienced myself and heard from countless patients/clients in the realm of physical therapy and personal training.

Decisions must be made for you to find the right support for you. This can be difficult. From what I found many times people are afraid of hurting feelings or the repercussions of their decision to speak up. I totally get this feeling and have been there. However, staying connected with someone who is there to help you, but is not actually helping you, only hurts you in the long run. It will not help you achieve your goals and it will certainly not lead to long term success.

If you get connected with a PT, trainer, coach, doctor, therapist, or nutritionist and you walk away feeling like they didn’t care about you and you gained nothing from the experience, please make a change. This is NOT the person to support you on your journey. A person to support you on your journey is one who you know wants the best for you. They engage with you. They take time to get to know you. They ask good questions to discover how they can help you. They build trust and a relationship with you. They empower you to take accountability and action. They add value to your journey. They will not focus on or elevate their skills and certifications, but will thoughtfully apply the skills they have to help you. This is the kind of person you want supporting you.

We are relational beings and in order for any of us to accomplish anything in life, we need good supportive relationships. This applies to all aspects of life. Relationships won’t all be the exact same because each person and situation is different. But, your support people need to be people you trust and be honest with, no matter what you need to share. This is so important. Life is too short to be connected with people that are not supportive of your journey.
