What do you do when you wake up and don’t feel like working out or taking care of your health? What do you do when you find yourself too tired to work out? Or to follow through on your other health goals? Do you stick with your goals despite how you feel? Do you adjust? Do you take a rest day and get back on track the next day? Improving health and fitness is a process, especially if it is not something you have prioritized, but now have decided to. Any time there is a change that happens in our lives, there will be obstacles and opposition. Whenever we start moving towards what is important in life, things come up that will challenge us and may even cause us to consider quitting. The most important thing is to decide how you will handle the resistance that shows up when you decide to prioritize health and fitness. There is no question that there will be challenges along the way. The most important thing is to decide how you will handle the challenges that show up. Will you choose to show up and do what you know is right and best for your health and fitness anyways? Will you choose yourself and your goals over these challenges? I experienced this with a recent setback in my shoulder recovery. Obstacles and resistance are a real thing. I was making great progress and at 11 weeks post-op, everything changed. I went from being confident and feeling strong in my recovery process to completely discouraged and questioning everything, all within a matter of an hour. I lost complete function of my arm and had severe pain. EVERY part of my being wanted to quit, this lasted over a month. However, despite all the tears and the intense desire to quit. I didn’t. I chose to focus on what I knew was right and best for my recovery and I continued to show up. There was NOTHING easy about it. My efforts did not give me the results I would have hoped and my function did not return to pre-setback. But because I continued to show up and do the work, I regained full range of motion of my shoulder, which helped me going into this second surgery. Despite the challenges, there was a purpose that led to a lot of growth. I learned unwavering persistence and consistency. I maturely handled less than desirable things that resulted from this setback, despite the intense emotions. Despite how challenging it all was, it had great purpose and brought about growth that I will carry with me as I go through the recovery process this second time around. What are some of the challenges you have overcome as you have pursued improving your health and fitness? Did you show up for yourself despite emotions? Schedule changes? Opposition? Be encouraged, each time you show up for yourself, despite the challenges you experience matters! Even if you can’t see it yet, decide to show up and do the work anyways. Each time you show up, it strengthens and grows your foundation. When you have a good foundation, it will help you remain committed and consistent despite the challenges that show up. Will you choose to show up today and do what is right and best for your health and fitness journey? Even if challenges arise? |
