Dealing with Challenges in Your Health and Recovery Journey

I must admit this last week and a half has been very difficult in my recovery journey. Consistent support that I thought I had, is now questionable. Unfortunately because of the emotions associated with everything, I allowed it to impact my recovery and my writing. Hurt and discouragement clouded the things I know and value. I wanted to quit everything, even my job that I love so dearly. I still took steps forward in the midst of it, but it was much harder due to the emotions I have been experiencing.

This morning I woke up and decided to change my mindset. I decided that I was going to act as if I had no support from people. I chose to ask God for help/guidance and wisdom and I went to the gym trusting He would help me. Because of some of the issues that I am experiencing with my recovery, I honestly wasn’t sure what today was going to look like, but I showed up anyway. While warming up, I really thought about the issues with my shoulder and what was preventing me from progressing. I thought about what was working and not working. I made decisions on what to do based on this information.

The emotions didn’t go away, but choosing to operate in this new mindset, lessened them. It allowed me to make better decisions and show up well within the realm of what I could do to help my recovery. I have an amazing gym family and they can usually tell when something is off with me, as I can with them. We look out for each other. They spoke some things I really needed to hear this morning. It was truly a blessing. Their encouragement and how they see me and my work in the gym in regards to recovery, gave me the courage to continue.

Whenever we make decisions to change our lives for the better, there are going to be challenges and obstacles. There will be emotions. There will be times of wanting to quit or give up. However, it is important that we press on and continue to do what is best for our health, recovery, exercise goals, or whatever it may be to better our lives. Choosing to show up and do this matters. It matters because we matter. Our actions reflect who we are and what we value. As hard as it is to accept, other people don’t determine our value and their actions have no reflection on us. This truth can be difficult to accept, especially if you have a heart and care. But it’s true. We are responsible for what we do. We are responsible for our health and making decisions based on what is best to take care of us.

Some guidelines that I set for myself to keep me on track with my recovery despite the emotions and challenges are:

  • Fuel my body properly
  • Hydrate my body properly
  • Exercise and stretch within pain free ranges
  • Participate in activities that promote healing
  • Spend time with supportive people that encourage and add value to my recovery process
